Ride (Hike) Dirt, Not Mud

Amazing weather, but now we’ve got a mud problem!

Please don’t use the trails when they’re soft and muddy. Their soil is exceptionally venerable during the freeze/thaw periods to displacement. Soil displacement is when soil gets pushed off the trail or excavated (ruts). That displacement permits water to ponding right on the trail and triggers further erosion.

If you come across a muddy section consider the slogan: Mud on heels or wheels, turn around. And if you think you can “cheat” conditions by riding or walking into the forest consider that you’re only making the problem worse as you trample the vegetation and widen the trail. Riding and walking on the edge of a muddy area tends to just make that muddy area wider (and harder to fix) better to step into the mud and take your licks for poor choices – The best option is to avoid muddy trails in the first place!

There are only a few weeks of the year where soil damage is a big problem for us and apparently we’re heading into them.

Donations to HAFTA

Friends of the trails, I am sure spring is around the corner so we hope you’ve been enjoying this winter weather. The trail conditions have been great lately and we’re seeing many people out enjoying the forest. A few have asked how they can support our mission to build, maintain, ride and represent the single-tracks without signing up as a member. Becoming a member is the ideal option from our perspective, but we realize some folks only visit for a few days a year and others take a Groucho Marx approach to clubs and associations.

If you just want to throw a few bucks in the trail tip-jar please do so through digital media. Any amount large or small helps us. HAFTA can currently accept Interac E-transfers and credit cards through Paypal. We currently do not process credit cards or debit directly on our website.

The address to send any either style of digital donation to is membership@hafta.ca

Thank you for whatever level of support you can afford to give this association!

Log your miles on The Den

Single-track conditions are mostly “super fast crunchy ice” this weekend (Jan 22nd, 2021), but there’s solid ice on the double-tracks. BTW!! If you’re a member that uses Strava be sure to get yourself some laps in on The Den.

Come Spring Glen Abbey Physiotherapy is going to award one lucky person from the Strava-pool of members that logged two or more loops on The Den a bunch of 12-speed freshness!

Don’t forget that COVID rules apply: Everybody allowed to go out and exercise, but remember to only visit our trails alone or with (up to 4) other members of your household and maintain a two meter distance from other visitors. 😷
